Two friends invented dog bed to tackle separation anxiety - and made a fortune

Two friends have invented a dog bed to help with separation anxiety - a common issue faced by pet owners - and the pair have made a fortune in the process.

Jye de Zylva noticed that his pet dog, a kelpie, would be distressed when he left the house - and would sometimes even go missing while he was at work.

It became such an issue that he teamed up with friend Davie Fogarty to make a new dog bed, and it worked a treat - as Jye's pet pooch no longer suffered with separation anxiety, as News.com.au report.

It worked so well that the two friends from Adelaide, Australia, created a business selling the dog beds - and now they're bringing in over £530,000 ( $1 million) in monthly sales.

Jye said: "The first design we settled on was one that kind of emulates a dog curling up in their mother’s womb. It’s a really common way for dogs to sleep and it gives them comfort.

“It took us probably six to seven months and we did our first million-dollar month, which was really exciting in terms of the success and what it meant.

“It was something that I didn't really expect in my wildest dreams; coming from being a chippie only six or eight months before that - it’s incredible to be able to look back where we started and how quickly we’ve grown.”

The company, called Pupnaps, sell four different designs and have orders for over 4,000 beds a week.

Their designs include the original dog calming bed, an orthopaedic memory foam bed, an orthopaedic floor rug and a calming furniture couch.

Jye said he thinks Pupnaps’ addresses a common problem faced by dog owners, and the RSPCA agree - as they note that dogs are prone to anxiety due to their nature as highly social animals who generally prefer to live in groups.

It is estimated 40 per cent of dogs will experience anxiety at some point in their life while 25 per cent suffer from separation anxiety.
