There were some worrying signs for the Bombers in that first half, but for all it was, they trail by just 10 points in a relatively even contest.
Essendon actually had four more inside 50s than North Melbourne in that half, despite the Roos cutting up the Bombers with their kick-mark game.
Clearances are split at 15-15 and both sides have had their fair share of turnovers at 29 apiece. In a low pressure match, it will be intriguing to see which side increases the heat in the second half.

Essendon pushed for a goal late but North defended their line. Analysis coming ...
It comes against the run of play. Great little turn and pass by Aaron Hall set it up, and Mahoney converted from directly in front.
Two minutes to play in the half and it is NM 40 ESS 29
Tristan Xerri gives away a 50 metre penalty for collecting Dyson Heppell after he marks.
And after Draper and Durham missing, Heppell converts. They deserved that.

He rises like a jack-in-the-box and marks to earns a close set shot but ... he misses. Follows a miss by Sam Draper from an easy shot. Bombers goal kicking another issue for them this arvo.
Owning territory at the moment though.

It goes to Nick Larkey on the goal line. They ran the ball from back to front with some risky kicks and good movement.
But wow, the Bombers just let them waltz down the field. Bad, bad signs defensively. That was poor.

Super effort from the Roos, while the Bombers were flat.
One Roo stood out though:
The Roos are playing a clever game. They are keeping the ball off Essendon with kicks and marks and, in addition, the Bombers pressure isn’t good enough anyways.
There’s been issues using the ball going inside 50 for North Melbourne but because the aforementioned is solid, they’re in the game anyways.
Charlie Lazarro, streaming through the middle of Metricon Stadium, kicked a goal with a minute and-a-half to play to more fully frank the control they’ve had.
Essendon need to lift. They’ve been stunted well. Should they win they enter the top eight and could stay there depending on how West Coast go against Adelaide later today.
And surprise, surprise, Devon Smith gave away a reverse free kick when the Bombers had the ball on the wing late and a chance to go inside 50. He continues to play with poor discipline.
